What is a Doula?

Let me point out a few examples of how Doula work exists all around us.

Maybe you overheard your mom counseling a friend to go for that big promotion or ask for a well deserved raise. “You can do this! You’ve worked so hard to get where you are.” —The Cheerleader

Or maybe your older sister went with you to the car dealership to buy your first car. And mid-negotiation she asked you in front of the salesperson “Do you want to take a second to think about your options before you make your decision?” —The Advocate

Or maybe your best friend in high school coached you through how to use a tampon for the first time. “This is the applicator and the tampon is inside of that. Take a deep breath before you’re ready to try.” —The Educator

Or maybe you yourself have been the shoulder to friend going through a breakup, a move, a miscarriage, or any other challenge. “This is really hard and I’m right here with you.” —The Listening Ear

The cultural awareness of this role has grown in the last decade but trusted support during pregnancy and postpartum has been present as long as birth has. Traditionally, the role would have been someone in your family or community who had walked this path before and could help guide you through it. Your mother, your aunt, your sister, your neighbor. Nowadays, Doulas work in their communities and can be trained and educated in all areas of birth, postpartum and lactation.

Postpartum doulas are there for the emotional support of this big transition. We can help you with caring for your baby, your physical recovery and tending to your environment to help bonding and healing happen with more ease. The entire family goes through postpartum, so this care is not just for the birthing parent— but for partners and siblings, too!

Doulas are everywhere. My mother was a doula, but yours might have been too. In my opinion, the most important aspect of the Doula role is the connection you feel to your doula. You’re in for the most amount of benefits, if there is that spark of being seen and connected to your doula— Let’s meet!
